Hello Film Co-op Monthly Workshop participants and friends of the North Alabama Filmmakers Co-op.

I am sending this e-mail to the entire Film Co-op mailing list plus a few friends who may be interested.

Our monthly workshop meets the First Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 pm in my space at the Flying Monkey Arts Center (except for holidays or when I have to be out of town - then we delay till the second Sunday of the month). The workshop content varies from month to month - sometimes we have hands-on hardware demonstrations, sometimes we discuss film making techniques, sometimes we review and discuss works in progress and sometimes we are fortunate to have a guest come to talk to us.

We have some business to take care of at this months meeting - our annual "Rocket City Short Film Festival" is coming up in October and other upcoming activities.

But we also have a special guest coming to talk about his career in film. Christoph Silber -

Considered one of the leading German screenwriters, Chris has written and co-written several feature films, including GOOD BYE LENIN and ARRANGED. His work for television spans sitcom headwriting, BBC docudrama and critically acclaimed episodes for Germany’s leading feature-length crime series TATORT. He has held workshops on writing and visual storytelling and is a member of the German Film Academy. His directing debut, the short ICEWIND, was selected for several US festivals. His next premiere is NORTH FACE, a European period drama opening at Locarno this summer.

Here's a summary of his career at imdb:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1557910/

Come early and bring something cold to drink (I already requested that the air condintioning be turned on for the meeting - but you know how hot it can get at this time of year!) We'll meet in Film Co-op President Anna Sue's space (Squeaking Tribe Puppets - directly accross from my space, 2nd floor near the theater) for this meeting so we can accommodate a larger crowd.

Regular workshop attendees: If you have samples of on-going projects you'd like to review, we can continue after the discussion with Chris.

Please join us for this unique opportunity - brought to you by your local Alabama Filmmaker's Co-op, now in our 31st year as an all volunteer community service organization fostering the love of cinema and independent film production and presentation in North Alabama.

Don Tingle

Film Co-op Workshop Director"

17 June 2008 We had a great turnout for our Basics of Short Film Production" workshop. 14 people showed up. I hope they didn't get scared off - the workshop is a "fire hose" of information, all of which can help make better short films. I saw that some on-line sources are calling these kinds of short films "MicroCinema". I'm not much for cutsie names, but this one seems to make sense.

Don't forget, the next monthly workshop is July 13th from 2 to 4 pm. Please join us. As always, it's free and open to the public.

13 June Tomorrow, June 14, is our "Basics of Short Film Production" workshop. Free and open to the public from 1 to 3 pm at the Flying Monkey. Join us if you can.

The focus of the workshop is to encourage people to make short films to enter into the Rocket City Short Film Festival coming up in October. Check the Film Co-op web site for submittal form, due date, etc.

Movie "Wonder Water" awarded first place.

Sam Tumminello's short movie "Wonder Water" was awarded first place in the Senior Division by Videomaker magazine (May 2008). Tumminello, a member of the Alabama Filmmakers Co-op, produced and directed the movie.

The movie, told in a minimalist style, depicts a classic Alabama story of youthful events leading to the character’s eventual memorialization. It was first shown at the Film Co-op’s Rocket City Short Film Festival last October 2007.

Quoting Videomaker Magazine: "A wonderfully executed video with a surprise climax. The colors and textures Sam uses are beautiful and tie in with the theme of the overall video".
